3:11:09 Questions and Answers
This FOLAR Symposium is on Landscape of Communities. These are seen as amenity landscapes which respond first to the wishes and ways of the local community, whether local residents or workers. The speakers are Leah McNally of the London Wildlife Trust on their community involvement; Guy Redmond of Leaves of Green on their work for schools and parish councils on nature based green space; Jan Woudstra on the work of the landscape gardener Robert Marnock and his concept for the Ladbroke Grove Housing development in the mid nineteenth century; Helen John on the Crossbones Graveyard and Garden of Remembrance, an intergenerational legacy concerning her work for the Bankside Open Spaces Trust in Southwark; and Sarah Cooke from the Groundwork Trust on their work with communities in North London. One theme for the FOLAR symposia is how the past can inform the present and the future. This symposium offered full opportunity for discussion with question time after each talk and a general discussion with the speakers at the end of the day, so everyone can have the opportunity to speak.

The Excellent Landscape Architecture of Wimbledon Common

Wimbledon Common in SW London has evolved from medieval, and feudal, common land into an excellent public open space. It is good for golf, good for recreation and superb as a biodiverse resource which makes a significant contribution to sustainability and conservation. What lessons does the Knepp Rewilding project have for other farms in the UK? Knepp is a terrific project. But it is NOT a model for every farm. Everything depends on the local context: location, landform, ecology, hydrology, agricultural land value, potential and much else. The argument of this video is that every farm needs an Integrated Landscape and Agroforestry Management Plans (iLaMP). Su...
East Village in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park London - landscape review

Robert Holden and Tom Turner, who reviewed the Queen Elizabeth Park in 2104, now review the landscape architecture of the East Village. They think it's good but as good as it could and should be. It is excessively based on car transport, lacking in green living balconies, green walls and usable green roof space.

Would the use of water, not also aid in this? I’ve always found Sheffield’s Peace garden, with it’s fountains and water channels (as well as vegetation) to feel very cool on a hot day.

Thank you for this beautiful and practical presentation on this great thinker. I especially appreciated the section on a quality without a name, something that I've long felt in such places as well, and similarly connected them to a simultaneous sense of home, comfort, freedom and eternity. You might find this series of videos interesting in relation; the notion of Civium has been an inspiring one for me, as has Jordan Hall, who came up with the concept and continues to do great work: ua-cam.com/play/PLeRBa-Ner4BsFuhndU4mMCDAqv97661GT.html&si=Pa0IpR2ZmsBJumcX

Of course, my answer is to choose a place that is well planned and poorly designed, and I justify that on several points. 1- Because planning is an input to design and design is an output. If the output is bad, it is sufficient to modify some of the process and thus the design will be successful without starting again - because planning is a foundational step for design-. 2- When choosing a good design and bad planning, what is the guarantee that this design will continue and succeed if its foundation contains a flaw (the logical rule says: The result follows the most trivial premises). 3- The ease of redesigning is less easy than re-planning after designing, as we said in the first point - because planning is a foundational step for design-.

Not good condition of your channel. That's when I realized that there is a problem with your channel. Video content is good but videos are not what SEO is for. I saw through VidIQ analysis that the SEO score of your last uploaded video was 0 out of 100. But the minimum score is 80+ to get video rank, views, subscribers. No targeted tag/rank tags use, no social media share, not perfect optimize & some problems. If you upload each of your videos with SEO optimization, you will get good responses day by day indefinitely. So if you want to get the work done by an SEO expert, give me a chance. Very intuitive and analytical. As one of your Thames Poly class of 83 & 85 its been interesting for me visiting over the years and seeing it transform. Very few folk seem to have the insight you speak of and there appears to be the usual individualism and ego evident that limits many major developments around the world. There is hope yet though, with the rise of design urbanism and its good to hear Robert's emphasis of those key aspects. Perhaps you could take a walk-through Battersea Park next.

I used to live on the Heygate estate during the 80's for about 5 years (just over). I lived in the highrise Ashenden on the 9th floor, and looking out on all the trees, and all the greenery was lovely, and now you've gotten rid of most of them. I would have thought in this day and age of climate control keeping the trees beneficial! You're sitting there coughing and blaming the handful of trees that have been kept, when it's quite clearly the building work going on in the background. The only benefit I can see is the balconies, and maybe the shops, but other than that it looks just like a concrete jungle, and I bet the properties are a lot smaller, as most new builds nowadays are.

As with medicine and with many other professions you can be a generalist or a specialist. (or a generalist with one or more specialisms). Re choosing specialisms, it is a question of supply and demand. By 'supply' I mean the talents and interests you have. By 'demand' I mean the availability of work for the specialism(s) you choose. Possibilities include: public parks, urban squares, housing, schools and universities, forestry, rivers, reservoirs - and a great many others.

@@digitalplanet6716 Most landscape design is done with graphic software and this is most effective when combined with freehand drawing (ie by switching back and forth between the two approaches). This does not require much knowledge of programming but it does require an enthusiasm for the aesthetic aspects of design. If you do not have this enthusiasm then it would be worth considering GIS software. Its use is more for landscape planning than traditional landscape design but it is very important. Try searching for videos about GIS and Ian McHarg and Carl Steinitz to find out more about this.

@@LandscapeArchitecture Well, maybe. But wouldn't there have been less cars, cyclists, pedestrians, Uber Eats delivery drivers, lorries, etc? Yesterday I cycled from Greenwich to Wilton Music Hall in Shadwell. The bit where you come up from Narrow street, over the bridge and across the road to Cable Street, is IMO horrific. I nearly got taken out by a cyclist coming around the corner in the other direction. He was going at a speed but it wasn't his fault as I was struggling up the incline and my bike was wobbling of his side. Thankfully I was able to move away in time or he would have taken me out. I was really shaken. There was no allowances for slower, less experienced cyclists like me. It felt like no-one was looking or stopping etc. I found cycling on Cable Street very nerve-wracking. I did not know which way to look or who's right of way it was every time I went past a side-road I feared for my life. Similarly I was worried about pedestrians being so close and stepping out in front of me. I didn't help that I was following people. It felt like if I slowed down someone was going to go into the back of me. Not a pleasant experience. People cycle like maniacs now. 🙏 PS I would be happy to cycle the route with you if you still live in London?

They cause major inconvenience to people with their 'recommendations' They recommended that a road adjacent to a local school is closed during usually busy times to 'encourage people to walk scoot or cycle to school. The reality being the cars just park round the corner on my own and neighbouring streets. They also recommended that a major thoroughfare in town was converted partly for a cycle path.
